Balancing Our Sacral Chakra, Part 1

The sacral chakra embodies the totality of our physical health and emotional well-being. It can bring us the highest degree of health or be the most dysfunctional of all energy centers in the human energy system.

When we abuse our bodies, treating them like machines that need only to be fueled and rested occasionally, we fail to realize that the body is a vessel for the spirit.

The sacral chakra works from a deep unconscious realm where our attitudes about ourselves create our physical well-being. Our relationship to health, well-being, and joy reflects how much we value ourselves and honor our spirit on the physical plane.

The function of this chakra depends on how well we take care of ourselves and know our boundaries and limitations. Proper function insures that we harness our life force so that we can be creative and spiritual.

This chakra promotes regeneration by feeding vital energy into our systems. It stimulates hormonal flow and influences our motility. It controls the way we move and our desire to exercise.

We preserve our energy and health by forming balanced attitudes about optimal health. We need energy, not only for daily tasks and to enjoy pleasure, but also to protect us through times of challenge and stress.

Finding the right lifestyle, one that encourages physical regeneration, keeps the sacral chakra active. Good nutrition is medicine for the body. Keeping the body hydrated and giving it ample rest and time off from stress and pressure keeps us stable and happy.

Difficult and challenging experiences strip our bodies of vital energy and deplete our reserves. If this chakra is not replenished it will drain all other chakras to fill it and, eventually, deplete the entire energy resources of the body.

Appreciating the physicality of the body without becoming compulsive or obsessional conserves energy and creates health. It fills the seas of energy reserves that the system can draw from in stressful times. We create these reserves each time we do something good for the body such as oxygenating our blood with exercise, taking time to smell the roses, and relaxing.

Each time we feel good about ourselves and honor our choices, we contribute to our physical presence.

Below is a practical exercise to let you review some of the harmful attitudes associated with the sacral chakra. This exercise illustrates a way of reframing negative attitudes into more positive and life-affirming ones.

Negative attitudes: The negative attitudes found in the sacral chakra tend to be all about our deservedness of a good life. If we feel we are not worthy of feeling good, of having enough of what we need, or of experiencing simple pleasures, we will be unhappy and miserable. We will also make others feel guilty for not making our lives better.

Unhealthy attitudes about sexuality and the right to enjoy good health and have abundance will focus on deprivation rather than on our right to what we say we want. These negative attitudes corrode our energy and limit our life force. They instill strict and rigid attitudes while serving to cut us off from ease, joy, and pleasure.

Positive attitudes: Developing a wholesome outlook toward our body by respecting its need for rest, recreation, touch, and expression helps us transform harmful attitudes into healthy ones. Finding the balance between work and ease, prosperity and charity, pushing the body and giving it rest teaches us about wholesome limits. Nurturing the body with tenderness and care creates an attitude that we are deserving. It creates a possibility for ease and strengthens our right to pleasure.
